Shiprock, NM - A new state of the art Math Learning Center was recently constructed at Diné College Shiprock North Campus and is now available for students to experience. Thirty-two computers were installed in a classroom to assist students with their self-paced learning of mathematics. This semester, students who are enrolled in the basic mathematics or math 096, will be utilizing the new facility. Directing the new classroom and its capabilities are the Math instructors at the Shiprock Campus, Dennis Price and Valiollah Manavi.
"This will be an opportunity for our students to learn mathematics at their own pace,² said Valiolla Manavi, "For years Math has been a challenge for our students, the learning center is part of our initiative to confront these issues."
The software that the Learning Center uses is the Pearson Publishing online computerized MathXL instructional program. This enables students to access their homework and meet deadlines remotely. President of Diné College, Dr. Maggie George supports the new Math Learning Center and the approach with students.
"We are always interested in innovative techniques of teaching subjects our students struggle with," said President Maggie George. "Meeting their needs and helping them to become proficient learners with these types of programs ensure their success."
The campus still offers face-to-face instruction for their intermediate courses but will soon be introducing those students to the learning center. Currently, students who are enrolled in MTH 096-Basic Mathematics have access to the new center.
The instructors piloted the project this semester at the Shiprock campus and will assess the student¹s progress. They will determine if the project will be implemented at the other campuses of Diné College based on the assessment.
