Diné College Hires Former Chinle Cross-Country Coach Shaun Martin As Athletic Director

Tsaile, AZ - Diné College has hired former Chinle High School Cross Country Coach, Shaun Martin to lead its athletic department. On Monday September 16, 2013, the new Athletic Director was introduced in a press conference that was held at the Student Union Building here in Tsaile. Martin will begin his new position at the College which will include his role as the Head Coach of the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams.

“I’m thrilled to accept this position at the College, this is an institution that has a great academic and athletic reputation throughout the country,” said Martin. “With a storied past and a bright future, I will continue to build on the talent and programs at Diné College.”

Martin was at Chinle High School where he served as the head cross-country coach for 9 years. There, he led the boys and girls teams to multiple championships and produced individual state champions in cross country competition in the 3A North Region.

“Shaun is the perfect fit to lead Warrior Athletics, his ability to lead an organization to new levels of success is outstanding,” said Dean Bitok. “His background as an athlete and coach are his greatest assets, someone who can identify with athletes and coaches is what this program needs.”

The hiring of the new athletic director comes after the College went 16 months without an athletic director. Dean Bitok was overseeing the three intercollegiate sports programs at Diné College before Martin was selected.

On Martin’s list of tasks, the upcoming College Rodeo to be held in Tsaile on Septemeber 20&21, 2013. This annual event will feature teams from the Grand Canyon Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.
